Professional Officer, Professional Services Team
Job Sharing Permanent Part-time (2 days per week)

The NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) represents the industrial, professional, educational interests of nurses and midwives in government and non-government forums at state, national and international level. With over 61,000 members the NSWNMA is one of the largest unions in Australia.

An opportunity exists for a nurse and/or midwife to provide professional advice to the NSWNMA officers and its members. The successful applicant will work collaboratively and job share with another Professional Officer, to provide representation on professional issues on national, state and local forums. The current incumbent works three days per week and is transitioning towards retirement. 

The Professional Officers provide comments by way of reports, submissions and responses to a number of inquiries; and analyse and review other bodies’ policies and oversee the professional interests of the members. The current incumbent has a broad range of responsibilities and oversees the following portfolios: regulation, scope of practice, the Higher Education sector, midwifery and research.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Registered nurse and/or midwife (registered with the NMBA) with at least 5 years post graduate experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A clear understanding of trade union principles.
  • At least two years financial membership of the NSWNMA or related union.
  • Well developed information technology skills with proven competence in the use of Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Word and Power Point.
  • A current driver’s licence (Some travel is required.)

Graduate qualifications in nursing/midwifery and/or a health related field will be highly regarded. Experience in the preparation of detailed submissions on government discussion papers, draft legislation and the like, is desirable. Demonstrated skills in policy analysis and report writing will be a distinct advantage.
