The ASU NSW &ACT (Services) Branch is a progressive, active and growing union. We are committed to organising members to grow their union and win campaigns that make a real difference for workers and contribute to a fairer society. An example of this was the landmark ASU Equal Pay campaign that won Equal Pay increases of between 23 and 45% for thousands of community workers across Australia. 

We have an organising position available in our Social and Community Services Division and are looking for an experienced organiser who will work with our dedicated and hard-working members in non-government community services (such as disability services, child youth and family services, community legal services, migrant and refugee support services, local neighbourhood centres and more…).

We are looking for someone who is able to work ideally full time, be based in our Sydney office in Redfern and able to start work with us in December or January.

Selection criteria:

  • Experience of around 5 years in working as an organiser for a union or equivalent organising role in another campaigning organisation
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in designing and running campaigns from beginning to end with limited supervision, supporting members to influence positive change in their workplace
  • Ability to identify issues / disputes that have organising opportunities or the potential for collective action in the workplace to grow union members’ power
  • Understanding of how to build recruitment into all aspects of your work
  • Experience in supporting, maintaining and growing delegates individually as well as developing delegate structures / networks in a workplace or employer
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including skills in recruitment, persuasion, and negotiation that can help achieve campaign goals and are based in democratic decision making
  • Experience in conducting negotiations with an employer and linking this to an organising strategy
  • Ability to think and act like a leader while also working well within a collegiate team environment
  • Readiness to participate in the union’s political and social justice agenda

Salary is based on experience and competency within the range of $71839 - $88506 for a full-time position. Generous working conditions apply.
