Communications and Campaigns Officer

The Australian Education Union - ACT Branch invites applications for the above vacancy. Members of the ACT Government Service are eligible to take LWOP from the employer to fill this position. 

Duties of the Position

  • Manage the union’s digital communications, including email, website, blog, video and social media channels, to maximise member engagement and participation.
  • Produce the union’s quarterly magazine, ACT Educator, sourcing, composing and editing written and graphic content. Work directly with members and organizing staff to get pictures, quotes and video clips that amplify educators’ voices.
  • Write and edit leaflets, newsletters, talking points, speeches, letters to the editor, op-eds, background pieces, fact sheets, press kit materials, and other materials as needed for the union’s campaigns, actions and events.
  • Coordinate activity of all communications-related vendors including web, design, social and online media, to ensure effective, timely and accurate delivery of work in support of campaign initiatives and the overall mission of the organization.
  • Monitor media coverage, maintain files, make recommendations on ways to improve media coverage.
  • Provide pro-active media outreach, and field inquiries from the news media; help prepare members or allies for contact with the news media.
  • Provide advice to the Lead Organiser and Branch Secretary on communications and campaign strategy.
  • Liaise and work with other branches, unions and union peak bodies to facilitate branch participation in local and national campaigns.
  •  Organise member engagement and volunteer recruitment activities and events

  • Produce communications to support the democratic processes of the union and assist in the co-ordination of meetings of Branch Executive and Branch Council

  • Perform other duties as required to support the union and its mission.

Selection Criteria


  • Demonstrated commitment to public education, unionism and social justice.
  • Strong understanding of, and close empathy with, the experience, challenges and aspirations of educators in public schools.
  •  Outstanding interpersonal, written and communications skills, with a strong ability to target messages to various audiences.
  • Ability to develop and execute online and offline campaign strategy and tactics in order to achieve campaign goals.
  • Experience in campaigning including: the creation and distribution of campaign materials; event management; and social media engagement.
  • Experience with tools such as CRM, CMS, NationBuilder, Google Analytics, and major social media platforms.
  • Political knowledge and nous
  • High level time-management, organisational skills and capacity to work as part of a team.


  • Competence in photography and videography
  • Demonstrated understanding of the industrial and professional issues facing public educators.

Special Conditions

Salary:        $109, 084 [currently equivalent to an Executive Teacher].

License:     It is a requirement of this position that employees have a current driver’s licence and a registered and appropriately insured motor vehicle for use in the position. Employees are entitled to an allowance for work related travel.
