Executive Director ASMOF (NSW)


The Australian Salaried Medical Officers’ Federation (New South Wales) (‘ASMOF NSW’) is a registered trade union established to promote and service the needs of employed medical practitioners in New South Wales. 

The ASMOF NSW office also provides organisational and administrative support to Federal ASMOF and other branches of ASMOF. 


ASMOF NSW is seeking a capable and experienced leader for the role of Executive Director.  The successful candidate will have the necessary experience to be able to undertake a range of tasks and responsibilities, which include but is not limited to the following:

  • Manage the effective delivery of industrial advice and representation to members, leading to the timely resolution of members’ workplace issues, and ensuring that advocacy provided for members in meetings or before relevant industrial tribunals is effective and respectful of industrial norms.
  • Oversight and/or approve any necessary documentation and correspondence required to be prepared by staff.
  • Supervise and/or directly lead in the negotiation of awards and agreements in both state and federal jurisdictions.
  • Prepare reports on industrial and member matters as required by the ASMOF NSW Executive/Council. 
  • Providing specific advice to ASMOF NSW Executive/Council where changes are made to requirements that might impact upon working methodologies and reporting requirements, including obligations on elected officials, right of entry and the like.
  • Prepare and circulate reports to ASMOF NSW Executive/Council and members in approved formats.
  • Be responsible for the oversight and preparation (in conjunction with administrative staff) of financial reports and budget related documentation.
  • Maintain links on behalf of ASMOF NSW with other relevant employee organisations such as Unions NSW, public health unions.
  • Report to ASMOF NSW Executive/Council on opportunities - either legislative, industrial or situational - that might provide possibilities to enhance ASMOF’s ability to provide and improve industrial representation and protection for employed medical practitioners.



  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications or significant, relevant experience in strategic and operational industrial relations at a senior level.
  2. Significant, relevant experience in leading and managing the strategic and operational imperatives of an organisation at a senior level, including the negotiation of awards, agreements and related policies and instruments.
  3. Thorough understanding or experience of the NSW industrial relations system and a sound understanding of the Federal industrial relations systems.
  4. Demonstrated high level interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills and the ability to flexibly manage people and situations in a collaborative manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to manage conflicting priorities.
  6. Ability to manage all budgetary, financial, personnel and office matters.
  7. Commitment to the principles of the trade union movement.
  8. Demonstrated computer literacy in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  9. Current NSW Driver’s License.


  1. Experience or understanding of the NSW public health system.
  2. An understanding of medical workforce issues in the context of NSW Health and its operations.
  3. Previous experience in a membership based organisation.


An attractive remuneration package ($ 180,000.00 to $ 200,000.00) commensurate with skills and experience, will be negotiated with the successful candidate including use of a private motor vehicle and flexible remuneration packaging.
