Senior National OHS Director

Position Description

The AWU National Office is seeking a full-time Senior National OHS Director to be preferably based in Sydney. This role will include the following work:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive OHS strategy for targeted industries in consultation with State Branches.
  • Develop targeted occupational specific OHS training to organisers, members and representatives from across AWU industries.
  • To identify areas within AWU represented industries that require specific research or initiatives to address OHS problems.
  • Produce a regular OHS report for the AWU National Executive in line with the Union’s workplan and emerging national projects.
  • Represent the Union as directed by the National Secretary on various working parties/committees, as required.
  • Provide Staff and Officials with high-level advice with respect to jurisdictional based OHS legislation.
  • Prepare correspondence to relevant stakeholders on behalf of the AWU National Office and Branches.
  • Prepare submissions to relevant government and parliamentary committees.
  • Demonstrated capacity to undertake workplace inspections and conduct risk assessments.
  • Proven ability to organise and recruit around OHS.
  • Have the qualification and/or skill to develop and run OHS training courses for officials and delegates.
  • Other duties as directed including, but not limited to, internal administrative tasks such as minute taking, recording activities on membership data base, worksite visits, recording reports to Branch Secretaries and regular bulletins to the broader membership.

Essential Criteria

  • As a minimum must have Certificate IV in OHS however related tertiary qualifications are preferred.
  • Been employed in a similar role for a minimum of 2 years where OHS was either a full-time responsibility or was a major part of that role.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal advocacy skills with strong attention to detail.
  • A demonstrated commitment to union values.
  • Can travel interstate regularly.

Desirable criteria

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or other relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with key industries in which the AWU has coverage.
  • Previous experience in the union movement.

 Conditions

Salary will be offered depending on experience and skills plus superannuation and other generous conditions.
