Bring Our Workers Home Safely

Bring Our Workers Home Safely

Liberal Governments are cutting our safety laws.

The Baird/Abbott Governments have no mandate to reduce our work health and safety protections; the only laws that have the capacity to bring our workers home safely.

They are planning these changes over the Christmas break out of public scrutiny.

The cuts include cutting or amending the WHS Regulations to:

- make it harder to negotiate, elect and train health and safety representation;

- make it harder to resolve safety issues and disagreements;

- remove the requirements on how to manage risks;

- reducing requirements to provide for adequate first aid, for emergencies, emergency equipment for provision of first aid;

- remove requirements for regulating remote or isolated work;

- remove the requirement to manage hazardous (suffocation, explosive or flammable) atmospheres;

- remove the requirement for your employer to monitor for deafness;

- remove the requirement for minimising flammable and combustible material from the workplace;

- remove requirement for fall prevention;

- remove regulation for high risk work;

- remove requirement for guarding of equipment;

- reduce requirements to manage storage and handling of chemicals; and

- reduce requirements to maintain an asbestos register.

Training for HSR has dropped off dramatically since the introduction of the 2011 Act-further erosion of the training will leave us with NONE being delivered at all!As for the other cuts- the retention of each of these are essential to the management of safety for thousands of workers in NSW . Mr Baird , if you proceed with these changes your name will go down in infamy!

In over 97% of workplace damaging occurrences, people do not just die in workplace incidents, they are KILLED by someone’s oversight. Only the very small percentage are due to so-called ‘acts of God/Nature’. Watering down the WHS act merely gives more opportunity to the people at fault to walk away…

All workers need to fight against the watering down of health and safety legislation: there are too many deaths and injuries in our workplaces.

Domonic – as the preselected candidate for my electorate of the Hawkesbury, I would like to give you this friendly warning. This issue amongst others will cost you many votes – I would like to arrange a face to face meeting to discuss these issues with you, give me a call on the number provided (you’ve rung me on that number before).

Regards, Graeme
