UNIONS NSW COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES - MEETING HELD THURSDAY, 24 NOVEMBER 2016
IN TRADES HALL AUDITORIUM, SYDNEY AT 5:30PM.

The President, Com. J. Kiejda occupied the Chair.

PRESENT:    M. Morey [Secretary], T. Costa [Assistant Secretary].

OPENING OF THE MEETING:   The President, Com. J. Kiejda opened the meeting and in doing so recognised the traditional owners of the land on which the meeting was held, The Gadigal People of the Eora Nation.

MINUTES:

The Secretary, Com. M. Morey moved:

"That the minutes from the meeting of 17 November 2016 as circulated be received".

Com. B. Smith (SDA) seconded.

CARRIED

The Secretary, Com. M. Morey moved:

"That the minutes of the meeting of 17 November 2016 be adopted".

Com. P. Davies (Prof. Aust.) seconded.

APOLOGIES:   Apologies were received and accepted for: E. Maiden (UNSW), B. Holmes (NSWNMA), R. Collison (AMWU), G. Kelly (USU), D.McKinley (ETU), R Tonkli (SDA).

EXECUTIVE CORRESPONDENCE:

1.  From Transport Workers' Union of NSW (TWU) write regarding a Proposal to Unions NSW for Project: establishment of a Multicultural/Lingual Unit.

Objectives:

  • To promote unionism to Ethnic communities in NSW
  • To recruit new members for union movement in NSW

Activities:

  • To co-ordinate and train a group of freelance interpreters who will be booked on casual basis to provide service for individual unions when needed.
  • To co-ordinate and provide translation and interpreting services to all affiliates unions in NSW, e.g.  To go out with organisers to recruit or communicate with members on EBA, or work related issues at work, or IR disputes.
  • To organise seminars and attend community functions and festivals (eg. New Year and religious festivals)
  • To provide information and empower current members and potential members to participate in any activities organised by union movement such as campaigns, May Day. Etc.  Through media such as radio, community TV and newspapers.
  • A number of unions support such a program to enhance unions in ethnic communities.

The Secretary, Com. M. Morey moved:

"That the correspondence be received and Unions NSW evaluate the proposal and subsequently convene a meeting with affiliates to discuss the options of better engagement of linguistically and culturally diverse communities”.  

Com. A. Claassens (RTBU) seconded.

REPORT:

1.  Domestic Violence We Won't Wait Campaign

Com. Natalie Lang addressed council and said it was an honour to speak to Unions NSW on the same night as the launch of “Union Pride”.

Tomorrow is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and White Ribbon Day.  Unions will be hosting a roundtable of workers who have the experience of supporting the victims of domestic violence.  Disgracefully Premier Mike Baird has cancelled his attendance. 

Com. Lang said she was immensely proud of the unions who have committed to the 16 Days of Activism commencing tomorrow with the International Day against Violence to Women and ending on 10 December (Human Rights Day).

These dates were chosen to emphasise that gender-based violence is a violation of human rights. 16 Days of Activism encourages women and men to take the lead in their communities and networks, by speaking out about violence and challenging the attitudes that allow violence to continue in our society.
