There is a need to support organisations such as Union Aid Abroad who are seeking to have asbestos removed from construction in countries such as Vietnam.  More broadly, there is a need to remove asbestos in Australia from the from the built environment and to review rules such as the current 10m2  rule which allows people to remove asbestos themselves when it is less than 10m2.

The Secretary, Com. M. Lennon moved:-

“That the report be received and noted”.

 Com D. McKinley seconded.

2.   iCare Board

The Secretary, Com. M. Lennon reported on the iCare Board structure and the establishment of the three entities:

  1. Insurance & Care NSW;
  2. State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA); and
  3. SafeWork.

The Secretary advised the Minister did not want to appoint a representative of Unions NSW to the Board and he had instead appointed him as an individual who had experience as Director of First State Super Director not from Unions NSW.

The Secretary advised he was happy to stand aside if the Executive did not want him to continue in the appointment once he had left Unions NSW.  He noted that while he was Secretary neither he nor Unions NSW would receive the board fees.  However, if Executive resolved he continue he would accept the fees as he was no longer an employee of Unions NSW.
