MOTION OF CONDOLENCE:

The Secretary, Com. M. Lennon advised delegates of the sad passing of Te Pare “TK” Kavana.  TK passed away suddenly on 14th July.

Com. Wayne Meany from the NUW spoke of the shock to everyone at the NUW when they heard of the sudden passing of their friend and colleague “TK”. Wayne said he had known TK for over 20 years and TK was a proud NUW official and a loyal friend to all.

TK had become a delegate in 2002 and in 2010 TK was offered a role in the NUW training arm where he became a full-time official in 2011 after completing Organising Works at the ACTU.  TK was known and loved by many in the wider labour movement, including those in Greater Macarthur Community Unions.

Before coming to Australia TK had worked in New Zealand for their Special Forces in the rank of Sargent and a trainer of new recruits in the army.

Our condolences and thoughts go to TK’s wife Cathy and their three children who are all present tonight. All at NUW will remember TK fondly – Rest In Peace Bro.

A MINUTE’S SILENCE WAS OBSERVED

The Secretary, Mark Lennon apologised for having to leave the meeting early and handed over the role as Acting Secretary to Emma Maiden for this evening’s meeting.

EXECUTIVE BUSINESS CORRESPONDENCE:

1.  From Transport Workers’ Union:-  The bus industry and their families invite affiliates to join them for a delegates briefing about the recent disgraceful actions by Transit Systems at Smithfield on Monday 10th August.

The purpose of the briefing is to discuss and endorse a plan of action in response to the decision by the company not to passon a legislated and fully taxpayer funded labour component pay rise of 2.37% to its drivers.

The briefing is another opportunity to remind Minister Constance the campaign is gathering momentum, as the community stands with drivers in their critical fight to secure realistic and reliable timetables, safe services and consistent industry conditions.  Better Buses Briefing details:

When:          8am -1pm Monday, 10th August

Where:         Smithfield RSL (Cumberland Highway, Smithfield)

It would be great to boost our bus driver members to have the support of affiliate members and their members so we ask all affiliates to circulate it to their members in the area.
