Field organisers: Unions NSW, Nov 2014 – March 2015

Unions NSW is looking to second and / or employ on a temporary contract basis up to four full-time or part-time field organisers to coordinate unions and union members in local areas in campaigning in the lead up to the March 2015 State election.

About the positions

As part of a small organising and campaigns team you will be allocated a geographical area of Sydney and its Local Union Community Council (a group of volunteer local unionists), to work with them to campaign in their local community.  A priority task will be the development and coordination of teams of volunteers in phonebanks to make calls to union members, supporters and voters.

This will be an intense but exciting and rewarding role as Unions NSW steps up its campaigning capacity.

About you

The successful applicant will be a self-starter who can take initiative and work unsupervised to meet the objectives of the Unions NSW campaign plan.

We will consider applications from both experienced organisers and enthusiastic new organisers who are passionate about campaigning for secure decent jobs, rights at work, and quality public services. 

Positions are fixed term and will commence in November and continue until Friday 3 April (excluding the Christmas holiday period).   There is limited flexibility with the start date and whether on a full time or part-time basis, depending on the area to which the applicant is allocated.  A compulsory training day will held with successful applicants in mid-late November 2014.

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrated commitment to the trade union movement
  • Good understanding of the principles of organising
  • High level interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a busy work environment and ability to manage competing demands and periods of intense work.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with office computer systems including Word, Excel, internet.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience as an organiser and campaigner
  • Demonstrated experience in applying the principles of organising in a community setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in organising community and public meetings managing community based campaigns, and activating functional community networks in a limited time period
  • Experience with using organising databases, such as, in particular, NationBuilder
  • Confidence in using social media
  • Understanding of NSW political system and State politics
  • Current driver’s license

Other details

Remuneration will be in the range of $55K to $80K pro rata, commensurate with experience.   For successful applicants who are taking leave without pay from other organisations, consideration will be given to remuneration being on the basis of salary replacement.

As it is a community campaigning position this will require evening and weekend work.

These positions will be subject to an annual closedown period from and any annual leave entitlements accrued during the period of employment will be paid during this time.

This position may require some travel.  A kilometre allowance for personal car use will be paid where an office pool car is not available.
