Overview - Role & Responsibilities

The Electrical Trades Union of Australia is seeking a highly skilled and dynamic media professional to join our National Office.

The person we are looking for will perform a central role in the day to day coordination of media, communications and PR for the ETU and will work closely with the National Secretary and other senior officials and staff.

This is a fast-moving and demanding role in a national political and industrial relations environment that offers an excellent career opportunity for the right person.

The successful candidate must have highly developed verbal and written skills and the ability to produce high quality news releases, speeches, articles and briefings within tight time frames.

We are looking for someone with a tertiary qualification and several years’ experience in journalism, media relations or other relevant field. Research skills, campaign experience, policy experience and a commitment to the union movement are highly desirable.

Reporting to and assisting the National Secretary, you will be responsible for preparing and producing all communication materials, including but not limited to campaign resources, web content, social media, National magazine, electronic newsletters and media management.

Primary Objectives of The Position

  1. To generate significant levels of positive media exposure for the work of the ETU, its associated entities and the union movement generally.
    To work closely with the National Secretary in developing, implementing and refining effective communication strategies to successfully position the ETU in terms of industrial relations and workplace issues within the public domain.
  2. To deliver effective communications to ETU members through high quality news releases, stories, articles, campaign material, magazines and other information materials in accordance with the strategic focus of the ETU.
  3. To proactively identify and manage opportunities for extended media coverage with “message” and theme consistency on political, campaign, media and communications issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lift the profile of the ETU through increased media exposure, campaigns & development of key communication strategies.
  • Providing high-level media, communication support and advice to the National Secretary and other Senior Officials as required.
  • Identify, support & co-ordinate, as necessary, the communications strategy that involve political, industrial and community campaigns.
  • Monitor, analyse, optimise and report on main-stream media, social media activities and campaigns.
  • Manage inquiries from the media in response to media releases or issues.
  • Researching, writing and editing of a range of media including key summaries of reports, media releases/responses, material for major campaigns, op-eds, magazine and bulletin copy, emails, speeches and online & social media content.
  • Timely production of the ETU’s National Magazine and other member publications.
  • Provide material & be responsible for managing all aspects of ETU websites, social media platforms and e-newsletters.
  • Develop and implement strategic on-line campaign tools and capacity and develop social media pages as required.
  • Review ETU digital media strategies and implement changes to our social media & online presence as required.

Highly developed verbal and written skill levels in communicating complex information in a streamlined and “marketable” fashion.

  • Capacity to provide insight into the ongoing development of a successful media and public relations strategy within the frequently changing environment of industrial relations and workplace issues.
  • Strong visual communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the union’s values – fairness, compassion, equity & the dignity of workers.
  • Understanding of the political environment as it relates to the ETU and its members.
  • Well-developed leadership skills & highly developed relationship management skills with key stakeholders in particular senior union, political & media figures.
  • Willing and able to take direction as required and a strong work ethic.
  • Highly developed organisational and time management skills enabling the capacity to work consistently under pressure and to meet deadlines
  • Capacity to exercise judgement, discretion and initiative within a politically sensitive environment.
  • Capacity to work long and irregular hours and travel regularly.

The Successful Applicant will have

  • Relevant Tertiary qualifications.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in magazine, newspaper, journal or on-line writing, copy production and editing.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, PowerPoint and Excel in particular) and knowledge of and experience with SharePoint would be an advantage.
  • Competency with Website development and maintenance skills.
  • Experience using social media applications, and multimedia production skills.
  • Experience building e-newsletters and EDMs.
  • A strong understanding of the challenges facing the Australian Union movement.
  • Awareness of the political and policy issues impacting Australian Electrical workers
