Media and Publications Officer – 1 year contract with potential for extension

The Transport Workers’ Union of New South Wales is seeking to appoint a Media and Publications Officer with strong labour values. 

Reporting to the Media and Communications Manager, this is an important role with one of New South Wales largest and fastest-growing industrial organisations.  You will be joining a team committed to improving the safety and working conditions, and strengthening the voice of the men and women working across the growing NSW transport sector. 

Your role will include, but not be limited to: 

  • Creating and implementing multi-platform media strategies to promote the union’s objectives in the interests of our members;
  • Proactive and reactive engagement with the media on a daily basis;
  • Developing writing, and editing our TWU News and other publications; 
  • Coordinating  opinion pieces for transport industry publications;
  • Designing, writing and editing the print and digital communications materials required to win campaigns, in close collaboration with on-retainer designers, organisers and members;
  • Providing timely and relevant media  advice on current issues;
  • Providing necessary verbal and written reports, as required;
  • Occasional unsociable hours (very early morning, weekend)
  • Additional duties and activities as required by the Media and Communications Manager or senior management team.

 The ideal candidate will possess:

 At least 3 years media experience, ideally in the labour movement or not-for-profit sector;

  • A proven ability to develop and implement creative and successful media events and campaigns;
  • Strong initiative  and an ability to work well as part of a small and committed team;
  • A demonstrated ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines; and
  • Good media contacts and relationships with NSW and national media outlets;
  • Excellent written and oral skills, with a keen eye for detail and line editing;
  • An understanding of activist campaigning and the principles of organising;
  • A commitment to the goals and objectives of the trade union movement
