ASMOF is a progressive trade union established to promote and protect the broad interests of salaried medical practitioners and to advocate for the provision and development of quality health services.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced policy officer to join our team.

The Policy Officer will play a critical role in managing our policy and media responses to issues that affect our members.

The main responsibilities of the Policy Officer are to:

  • Monitor, critically analyse and respond to national and state/territory government initiatives, policy and proposed legislation that impact on the Union and salaried doctors
  • Provide briefing papers to elected officials and management team on matters that impact on the Union and salaried doctors
  • Initiate, develop and write high quality submissions, position papers and policy statements on issues relevant to the Union and salaried doctors
  • Foster and maintain media relationships and provide media and communication support and advice to the Executive Director, the Federal Executive Officer and elected officials
  • Research, write and edit media releases/responses, op-eds, speeches, online and social media content
  • Develop effective channels of communication with ASMOF members to inform the ASMOF response to submissions and consultations
  • Work collaboratively with other ASMOF staff, including providing advice on proposed government initiatives and legislation and developing proposals for projects or initiatives emanating from policy work
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with relevant stakeholders.

To be successful you will have:

  • A commitment to trade union values and social justice
  • Excellent research and communication skills and an ability to communicate complex concepts to a range of audiences with demonstrated experience (e.g. research, write and edit submissions or reports to government or peak bodies, writing position statements and media statements)
  • Demonstrated capacity to comprehend complex issues and think strategically.
  • Demonstrated capacity to critically analyse government policy and legislation
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (e.g. health policy, law, politics, journalism) and experience in positions involving policy development and/or advocacy
  • Familiarity with government structures, policy processes and parliamentary/legislative practice
  • The ability to manage a variety of tasks, manage competing priorities, use initiative and work to deadlines
  • The ability to work co-operatively in a team environment.
  • The capacity to participate in effective networking and build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Well-developed information technology skills with proven competence in the use of Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Word and Power Point
  • An understanding of the Australian healthcare system
  • Knowledge of contemporary industrial relations issues and an awareness of issues relevant to the ASMOF membership
  • An awareness of ASMOFs objectives, policies and procedures.

SALARY is in the range of $99,219-$124,428 per annum (pro rata) depending on applicant’s level of experience.  Employer superannuation contributions of 9.5% are paid in addition to salary.

Hours of Work: This is a part time position of between 3-4 days per week.
