Industrial Officer

General Overview
United Voice members work in a wide range of industries across Australia. Significant areas of coverage include cleaning, security, childcare, aged care, education, hospitality, health, and manufacturing.

United Voice is looking for a recent graduate of industrial relations, law or related disciplines to work within the industrial team in the National Office.

The position sits under the broad direction of the National Industrial Co-ordinator and the occupant will be expected to work as part of a team and individually to provide high quality, professional and timely advice to assist in the achievement of sound industrial outcomes for members.

Primarily, the Industrial Officer is responsible for industry and legal research, drafting policy submissions and all aspects of industrial case work.

In conjunction with the National Industrial Co-ordinator, the Industrial Officer will assist with

• any industrial matter of concern to the United Voice and its members;
• award reviews and interpretation;
• enterprise bargaining;
• industrial, wages, and legal research; and
• drafting applications and submissions.

As required, the Industrial Officer may assist United Voice Branches in their industrial and legal casework.

Job Description
The main duties of the position are to:

• contribute to industrial advice to support the strategic development of national industry campaigns;

• undertake industrial and legal research as required in campaign/industrial team plans;

• monitor and maintain national information systems about bargaining, legislative changes, major decisions and cases impacting on the industrial rights and conditions of United Voice members;

• assist with the co-ordination of bargaining with national employers, and (where required) contribute to negotiations;

• monitor, aggregate and analyse the effect of decisions and judgments of the Fair Work Commission and other relevant tribunals and courts;

• prepare and present cases and submissions for United Voice;

• provide industrial information and support for staff, delegates and members;

• provide support to Branch industrial and legal officers and organisers and, where necessary, undertake or assist with industrial work for Branches;

• assist with the communication of industrial information to branches and to United Voice members;

• assist in the preparation of strategic and legal advice to the leadership of United Voice; and

• speak at and present papers at union and other public forums as required.

Essential Experience and Qualifications
SELECTION CRITERIA
The skills required for the position are:

• have knowledge of and be competent in the application of the Federal legislative environment;

• a sound knowledge of industrial relations legislation and an understanding of the labour market generally;

• well-developed research, analytical, problem solving skills and a capacity to contribute to strategic planning;

• ability to prepare and articulate a position formally at a tribunal, court, mediation or meeting;

• strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to develop relationships with government, academic and community research and interest groups; and

• a demonstrated commitment to United Voice values and trade unionism generally.

Desired Experience and Qualifications
University level qualifications in law or industrial relations or working towards an appropriate degree are highly desirable for this position.

Must be able to obtain a Right of Entry Permit.

Salary
$60,000
