It’s a bit rich for the Business Chamber to attack workers for allegedly taking Friday sickies (Daily Telegraph, Friday 19 April) when there is a genuine and documented exploitation going in the workplace, unpaid overtime.

According to research undertaken by The Australia Institute into unpaid overtime, Australians are effectively ‘donating’ $72 billion worth of labour to their employers each year.

For an average NSW worker that equates to about four weeks of extra unpaid work each year.

Perhaps the business lobbyists who are attacking Australian employee need to recall the old adage about people in glass houses.

As for the persistent attacks on penalty rates, the community has consistently shown its support for properly compensating employees who work anti-social hours.
