NSW Media, Communications and Campaign Organiser 20170602

  • Establish yourself as an online campaigner
  • Broad potential for role with scope to specialise
  • Work as part of a team on campaigns for secure jobs and access to quality higher education

The National Tertiary Education Union (NSW) is looking for a highly motivated individual to develop our campaigning capacity through communications, design and data support to our organising and campaigning work.

The role involves application of organising principles to NSW Division and Branch communications to increase union membership and help our members win their campaigns.

Supported by a large team in NSW and specialist staff in our national office, you will have responsibility for managing the free to air and social media profile of the union, producing high quality communications, and develop other staff and activists in these areas.   The role will involve media liaison from time to time as campaigns require.

Based in our Surry Hills office, the role involves working with industrial and organising staff and branch activists from our eleven university branches in metropolitan and regional NSW.  The role involves occasional travel to regional campuses.

We encourage applications from people with an understanding or background of union or community organising, communications or campaign data specialists, as well as others with relevant knowledge or experience.

This is an exciting time for NTEU as our growing union approaches the launch of a long term national campaign to address the epidemic of insecure work in higher education.  In NSW the Union represents over 7000 members in academic, professional, teaching and research roles at universities and other higher education providers.

Essential criteria

  • Ability to work constructively with a range of people and manage competing demands.
  • Excellent written expression and ability to convey complex messages sharply and succinctly.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage free to air and social media in a context of campaigning or striving to achieve specific outcomes.
  • Familiarity with graphic design software (preferably InDesign and the Adobe Creative Suite), and competence in graphic design and layout.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience with using activist and campaign CRMs such as NationBuilder.
  • Understanding of organising and campaigning principles, and/or the higher education sector.
  • Commitment to trade union principles to the importance of access to quality higher education.

Salary for the position will be in the range of $88,096-$96,577 depending on skills and experience. All other employment conditions are contained in the NTEU National Staff Agreement.
