Cargo In the Wrong Hands
By Erol Kahveci
Cargo handling is best left to trained port workers, but increasing numbers of seafarers are seduced or pressured into it.
This can break down the traditional mutual support enjoyed between dockworkers and seafarers. At issue are employment rights, welfare and occupational health and safety.
ITF collective bargaining seeks to establish that ships' crews will not be required or induced to carry out cargo handling. However deregulation is impacting and strategies are required to deal with the increasing occurrence of crews dealing with cargo. Casualisation is part of the problem and this contributes to health and safety issues.
