Overview of Position

The Membership Retention Co-ordinator is responsible for driving a transformative program to improve membership retention and experience in one of Australia’s most innovative and diverse trade unions.

The role will work closely with branches around the country to implement a series of projects aimed at better understanding and responding to flows in membership with the aim of designing systems and processes to drive improvement and apply best practice methodologies in membership retention and engagement, and service provision.

This is a new exciting position in the national office of the union.  It presents an opportunity for a motivated person, with strong collaboration and analytical skills and attention to detail to help shape a substantial reform program in the national union.

The right applicant should have experience in a trade union or a similar membership based organisation, ideally in devising creative data driven solutions to guide organisational and cultural change.

This position will require travel.

The position may be full time or part time to suit the right candidate.


  • Drive a membership retention strategy focussed around a multi-faceted series of pilot projects to improve membership engagement and retention
  • Trial and evaluate approaches to develop best practice methodologies
  • Lead the improvement of operational processes and service provision
  • Work with branches to translate learning and instil a sense of urgency, accountability and trust
  • Undertake analysis of data to unpack membership trends and focussed the organisation on continuous improvement
  • Review and prepare concise reports and, where appropriate, make recommendations about targeted initiatives and campaigns to support organisational, cultural change and data
  • Provide expert advice through strategic analysis and a well developed understanding of the membership and external imperatives driving membership recruitment and retention in United Voice.

Selection Criteria - required skills, knowledge and abilities

The skills required for the position are:

  • Ability to collate, interpret and manage data
  • Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills, including statistical analysis and technical expertise in data analytics
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to provide authoritative advice and translate complex concepts and information
  • Ability to develop collaborative strategies and maintain relationships and built trust with stakeholders
  • An understanding of membership based organisations and the drivers for influencing membership recruitment, engagement and retention.

Formal Qualifications and Experience

Tertiary level qualifications and experience in a membership organisation.
