Unions NSW has welcomed today’s announcement of a $2.9 billion road plan to connect the people of Western Sydney with the jobs bonanza that will result from the construction of a Western Sydney airport.

The joint state-federal announcement is expected to create up to 4000 jobs in the construction phase, which begins in 2016.

The Northern Road will be expanded to four lanes from Narellan Road to the M4, while the Elizabeth Road from the M7 wiill also be upgraded along with an overhaul of Bringelly Road.

Unions NSW campaigned for yesterday’s Badgerys Creek announcement. Secretary Mark Lennon said today’s follow up road announcement was critical to maintaining public support for the project.

“There’s deep public support for the construction of a second Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek, particularly when people consider the infrastructure and jobs that it will deliver to Western Sydney,” Mr Lennon said.

“The union movement’s support for this project was always based on the jobs and infrastructure that would come with it. So today’s announcement is a tremendous boost.

“Expanding these roads will have a number of benefits.

“Obviously, we will see thousands of jobs created through road construction.

“But more broadly, these road upgrades will ease congestion, improve productivity and connect the people of Western Sydney with quality jobs within their region.
