D-I-Y renovation shows overlook serious risks

    Sam K :

D-I-Y renovators urged to air asbestos warnings Unions NSW has urged “do-it-yourself” home renovation programs to include an on-air warning about the dangers of asbestos in each program they broadcast.

The move was endorsed at last night’s full meeting of Unions NSW, after an appeal by Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia President, Barry Robson.

Unions NSW Secretary Mark Lennon said the major TV Networks had an obligation to show responsibility.

“The tragedy of asbestos related illness has touched far too many families and these D-I-Y home renovation shows need to ensure they’re not unwittingly adding to the problem,” Unions NSW Secretary, Mark Lennon said.

“These programs are wildly popular and present a tremendous opportunity to outline the potential danger of asbestos as part of any home renovation.”

More than 700 people die from mesothelioma each year, and any house built before 1984 could contain asbestos.

Mr Lennon advised D-I-Y renovators inspired by the programs to be mindful of the dangers posed by asbestos.

“Always consult the State workcover authority regarding asbestos risk with any renovation and make sure you exercise caution,” Mr Lennon said.

Unions will consider taking their concerns to the Australian Communications and Media Authority if the issue is not resolved.
