Four-day weekend will leave working people refreshed and productive

Unions NSW has called on employers to approve employee requests for annual leave this Friday, to allow working people a four-day long weekend.

Unions NSW Secretary, Mark Lennon, said it was in everyone's interests to capitalise on the Australia Day holiday before the working year begins in earnest.

"Any employer who doesn't allow their employee to take a day of annual leave this Friday is shooting themselves in the foot," Mr Lennon said.

"A rested and healthy workforce is a more productive workforce.

"Unless there are extreme circumstances, all employees who ask to have this Friday off work should have their request granted."

Mr Lennon said opportunities for quality time with friends and family were too rare and a decent break was a good idea before the working year swings into action.

He said employers should be receptive to such requests.

"It's important that both employers and employees approach these issues in a constructive, co-operative way to ensure everyone has a smooth start to the working year."
