NSW Unions will tonight join forces with business, government and community leaders at the annual Vinnies ‘CEO Sleepout’ to raise much-needed funds in support of the nation’s homeless.

Unions NSW Secretary Mark Lennon, who will be spending his sixth year sleeping rough, said the joint union initiative is as much about shifting attitudes towards the homeless as it is about raising funds.

“This is a great example of the cross community coming together to effect change. Homelessness is a multi-faceted problem and as a society we need to band together to try and come up with solutions.

“Tonight, over 105,000 fellow Aussies will sleep rough in the freezing cold. Even $50 can help keep a family warm this winter. $150 provides emergency accommodation and food to a family in crisis. We all need to do our bit to help improve the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves,” Mr Lennon said.

The NSW Unions Group has so far raised over $25,000 which will go a long way towards the target of $10 million Vinnies hopes to raise this year.

“If there is one thing I have learned from taking part in this event over the years it is that homelessness can affect any one of us. Think about that the next time you are walking by a homeless person and if you can take the time to talk, even if it’s just to say hello, it can make all the difference to someone’s day.”

Mr Lennon will be joined on the NSW Unions Team by:

  • Alex Claassens - Secretary RTBU
  • Bernie Smith –  NSW Branch Secretary, SDA
  • Gerard Hayes State Secretary, HSU
  • Gerard Dwyer – SDA National Secretary
  • David Bliss –  Assistant Secretary, SDA (Newcastle)
