EXECUTIVE CORRESPONDENCE:

1. From: Rail, Tram and Bus Union:- regarding Join Your Union Day Event and Training Session

I write to congratulate you and the team at Unions NSW for the Join Your Union Day initiative for May Day.

Across the country, union members have said it is time to change the rules. In order to do that we need to build power and a key element in building power is to grow our unions – we cannot get stronger and get smaller.  This will require us to experiment and try new things to achieve this goal and I’m proud that NSW is leading the way on this, by planning a day dedicated to union recruitment and by making sure our organisers have the skills to grow our unions on that day and beyond.

The work that has been done by Unions NSW, the May Day Committee and the ACTU to make Join Your Union Day a success is a credit to everyone involved. Our organisers returned from the combined Unions NSW and ACTU Organising Centre preparation and training day inspired and committed to making the Join Your Union Day a huge success.  Particular thanks to Mary Yaager from Unions NSW and Alice Salomon from the ACTU for their hard work on that preparatory event.

I look forward to hearing the results of Join Your Union Day.

2. From
The United Services Union (USU):-regarding Join Your Union.

The United Services Union (USU) congratulates Unions NSW for conducting the “Join Your Union” training day this week on Tuesday, 24 April 2018. We believe that Unions must have the ability to engage with workers not always previously exposed to Trade Unions and perhaps ignorant of the good that Unions have done over decades. The training delivered by Alice Salomon and Mary Yaager focusing on techniques to hold short conversations with just a few “asks” was found to be useful by our officials and we imagine other Unions.

With “Join Your Union Day” to be held on Tuesday, 1 May 2018 the USU recognises the challenges we and other Unions working with us at our target site of Martin Place will face on the day. This exercise is part of the Union movements “Change the Rules” campaign which may play a significant part of defeating the dysfunctional, mean-spirted Turnbull government.

We look forward of hearing reports on outcomes and successes from all Unions that participate in this exercise at the various other sites around Sydney at next week’s Council meeting.

The Secretary, Com. M. Morey moved:

“That the correspondences be received and Unions NSW congratulates the work of the May Day Committee and encourages all unions to be involved in Join Your Union Day on May 1”.

Com. P. Reid (USU) seconded.

CARRIED
