UNIONS NSW COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES - MEETING HELD THURSDAY 5 JULY 2018
IN TRADES HALL AUDITORIUM, SYDNEY AT 5:30PM.

PRESENT:  Morey (Secretary), E. Maiden and T. Costa (Assistant Secretaries).

OPENING OF THE MEETING:  The President, Com. J. Kiejda opened the meeting and in doing so recognised the traditional custodians of the land on which the meeting was held, The Gadigal People of the Eora Nation.

The Secretary, Com. M. Morey moved:

That the minutes from the meeting of 7 June 2018 as circulated be received.”

Com. Mark Keiran (NSWNMA) seconded.

CARRIED

The Secretary, Com. M. Morey moved:

That the minutes of the meeting of 7 June 2018 be adopted.”

Com. Rita Martin (NSWNMA) seconded.

REPORTS: 

OUTCOMES OF THE SECRETARY’S PLANNING DAYS

The Secretary, M. Morey reported that at the 2018 Unions NSW Planning Days the following was agreed:

  • Labour Council to be on the first Thursday of the month with a focus on key events and guest speakers
  • Growth & Campaigns directly prior to Executive
  • Report on Unions NSW activities, not just activities mentioned in correspondence
  • Circulate correspondence rather than read out and adopt in the meeting
  • Issues to be notified by correspondence and attended at Council by a speaker
  • Continue the reporting on whole of movement activities and issues

The Secretary, Com. Morey reported on the new structure/Agenda for Thursday nights, which will now be held monthly) and other outcomes from the Secretary’s Planning Days.

Growth & Campaigns Meetings will be:

  • 3.30pm Start time
  • Major campaigns:
    • Change the Rules
    • State Election
    • Public sector campaign and wages cap
    • We Won’t Wait
    • Union/ Affiliate campaigns -update if action focused, what’s happening, strategies.

  • Same attendees as Executive Meeting
  • Key people/staff invited to speak as required
  • Sharp, focused and to the point

The process for managing correspondence for Executive Meetings:

  • Deadline for correspondence to be the Friday before. To be circulated as a package and if people want to attend to speak, they can.
  • Announcements
  • Trial length of Executive and adjust as necessary.
  • Trial whether the second Executive meeting is needed.

It was suggested that some meetings be held in Western Sydney which was agreed to be tried.

In relation to campaigns, Unions NSW will develop a Union Framework and Asks for Change of Government in NSW

In relation to the Key Whole of Movement and Government Campaigns, the Secretary provided an update regarding:

     - Electoral Funding Laws
     - Change the Rules
     - We Won’t Wait

In relation to the Campaigns Director Training Course, the Secretary has spoken to Paul Goulter and Chris Walton who has a course ready to go. He is happy to run it but wants people to skill up a few people to run it so there are several trainer options. The Secretary is confirming dates and will outline criteria and expectations when these are sent around; probably three days and two blocks.

In the Unions NSW building in Parramatta, the Secretary outlined how he is thinking of setting up a new hub with a printer and WIFI etc. so people can have a base for attending the IRC. Kate is working on it.
