UnionsACT is looking for Canberra's most enthusiastic campaign organiser to work at the front line of union and community activism.

As the peak council for Canberra's union movement, UnionsACT is leading several major campaigns and will be actively engaged with the ACT Election in October 2016. UnionsACT also runs campaigns to support workers rights, stand up for community and public services, and to defend our living standards.

The campaign organisers position will work in a close-knit team based in Civic, and will work at the front-line of our grassroots community campaigns.

About the role

The campaign organiser role is to drive the community and field campaign for UnionsACT. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, energetic and committed to progressive values. They will work at the front line of our grassroots campaigning, especially recruiting, liaising with and developing volunteers and activists. Campaign organisers will principally work in Canberra, based from our Civic Office.

The campaign organiser will work in a team under the supervision of the UnionsACT Secretary.

Key tasks and duties

  • Recruit, motivate and develop people to be involved with UnionsACT’s campaigns;
  • Deliver the various community organising activities, including organising phone banks, streets stalls, door knocks, and events;
  • Assist with organisational priorities such as campaign events, outreach and stunts;
  • Provide administrative, technical and campaign support to volunteers, activists and colleagues;
  • Engage in UnionsACT campaigns in a proactive manner;
  • Other duties as required.

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated commitment to union values
  • Demonstrated commitment to grassroots and community engagement & activism
  • Confident verbal communication skills, and willingness and capacity to communicate, engage and motivate supporters and volunteers
  • Demonstrated computer/digital literacy
  • Demonstrated willingness and capacity to organise a range of community campaign activities and events
  • Self-motivated, and willing to take responsibility for tasks required to achieve campaign goals
  • Australian drivers’ license
  • Post-secondary qualification desired, but not essential.


  • Full time position
  • Salary $51,383-$56,978
  • 14.5% employer superannuation contribution
  • Fixed-term employment contract until 30 November 2016
  • 17.5% annual leave loading
  • Mobile phone provided
  • Work hours will include weekends and after-hours work.
