Digital Organiser and Communications Officer

Overview of position

 United Voice is a union of workers organising to win better jobs, stronger communities, a fairer society and a sustainable future.

We are recruiting an on-line campaigner. The position will have responsibility for developing timely and high quality online communications. This position will monitor social media and online news platforms for opportunities to engage and build our online supporters and involve them in regular campaign activities. It will provide supporters, activists and members with meaningful ways of participating in United Voice campaigns. The position will also have responsibility for recognising and responding to campaign opportunities online as they arise.

We are looking for someone who is savvy social media user, an excellent communicator, has some experience with Nation Builder or similar campaign platforms, and can write a great email. Graphic design and video editing skills will be viewed favourably though these skills are not essential.

This position is a full time, 12 month contract.


The key duties of the Digital Organiser and Communications Officer are as follows:

Organise supporters, activists and members (primarily in an online setting):

  • Build and manage online groups of activists and members through direct engagement and conversation;
  • Recruit members and supporters to United Voice campaigns;
  • Provide timely and proactive responses to members, activists and potential supporters;

Develop and support campaign activities and events

  • Work with the Campaign Director to develop, and deliver, communications plans targeted to particular groups of people and campaign activities.
  • Develop and implement high quality online communications and social media campaigns – posts, graphics, email and video
  • Liaise with communications staff across the union and support their requirements as part of the Save Our Weekend campaign.
  • Contribute to the development of campaign strategies
  • Identify opportunities to position United Voice drawing on industry research and analysis in conjunction with senior staff
  • Maintain links and develop relationships with external campaign allies and contacts, and build campaigning alliances.

Other communications and campaign support

  • Contribute to national United Voice communications and campaigns as necessary, through writing for the United Voice magazine and supporting other national activities.

Selection Criteria

The skills, knowledge and abilities required for this position are:

  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to write and prepare materials for a wide range of audiences.
  • Highly developed relationship management skills including the ability to move people and to develop relationships with a diverse range of people.
  • Ability to identify campaign opportunities and plan timely responses.
  • Experience using social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
  • Experience using Nation Builder or similar campaign platforms.
    • Demonstrated work ethic.
    • Demonstrated commitment to the union's values – fairness, compassion, equity and the dignity of workers.
  • A high level of computer literacy including knowledge of office information technology applications, including spreadsheets, and presentation software.

Desirable Criteria

Organising experience, video editing and graphic design skills will be viewed favourably.

Formal qualifications

None required although formal qualifications relating to Communications will be viewed favourably.

 Eligibility to receive a Right of Entry Permit under both Federal and State legislation is required.
