Overview of Position

United Voice is a union of workers building industry and political power to win real change in workplaces, industries and people’s lives.  Workers’ voices, activism and leadership are central, and essential, to winning.

United Voice members include workers in health and aged care, cleaning and security, early childhood education and care, school education manufacturing and hospitality.

The Strategic Communications Coordinator is a high level role, entrusted to develop and implement communications and media strategies and coordinate communications at the national level.  The Coordinator will be the “eyes and ears” of the union in the public sphere, helping United Voice set the agenda, achieve its campaign goals, strengthen its brand and grow its membership.

The Strategic Communications Coordinator will oversee a range of content, including online communications and hard copy publications, videography, events and general communications products and special priority projects.  

Working with the Director of Public Affairs, the Strategic Communications Coordinator manages relevant members of the National Communications and Media Teams, as well as providing leadership and coordination to United Voice communications teams across State branches.


The Strategic Communications Coordinator:

Leads the development of proactive communications strategy reflecting the union’s values and priorities.

Oversees the development of innovative, creative and high quality communications products across all media.

In conjunction with the National Leadership, campaign reference groups and United Voice Branches develops, implements and monitors communication plans for national United Voice campaigns.

Works with the campaign teams and political coordinators to build lobbying and leverage campaigns targeted at governments and corporations.

Responsible for tendering to external providers e.g. advertising agencies, polling companies etc.

Oversees social media and website strategy and content.

Coordinates the provision of advice and practical support for small branches on communication matters.

Manages relevant team members.

Selection Criteria

This senior level position requires:

High level strategic thinking and planning, and demonstrated ability to develop communications strategy.

Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise a communications team that must work to schedules, meet deadlines, work within budgets and deliver quality integrated communication products across a diverse range of media.

Experience with, and a demonstrated understanding of integrated  communications across relevant  areas such as new media, on-line campaigning, public relations and media management, website management, copywriting, film and print media. 

Experience in trade union, political or social campaigning, including strong political intuition.

High level written and verbal communication skills for target audiences.

Demonstrated skills in the use of NationBuilder and office software including Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

High level interpersonal communication skills with an ability to develop effective working relationships within United Voice.

Demonstrated commitment to United Voice values and social justice issues, as well as a sound knowledge and appreciation of the role of unions in Australian society.

Formal Qualifications

A minimum of five years’ experience in media or communications
