The Transport Workers’ Union of Australia (TWU) is one of Australia’s leading campaigning trade unions, holding some of the biggest companies in the world to account over their treatment of workers, such as Uber, Deliveroo, Amazon, Aldi and Qantas.

The TWU has led the charge in highlighting and tackling exploitation in the gig economy, pressuring companies and the government to address chronic underpayments and deadly pressures on food delivery riders and rideshare drivers. During the COVID shutdown of aviation, the TWU cemented its role as a powerful voice for aviation workers, serving as an integral player during the sale of Virgin Australia, and challenging Qantas over safety breaches, wage theft and the illegal outsourcing of 2,000 ground crew and cabin cleaners. Since it was founded, the TWU has represented the interests of truck drivers and logistics workers, exposing the financial pressures by major retailers, manufacturers and oil companies on road transport – Australia’s deadliest industry.

Central to these campaigns and the push for reforms has been the TWU’s work in exposing injustices against workers publicly and promoting member-led actions to lift standards in transport. The communications and media team plays an important role in this in working closely with media and member communications.

We are seeking someone with strategic media and communications skills to identify opportunities for media coverage, digital engagement and member activation that will drive the communications and campaigns strategy to give transport workers a powerful voice.

  • Help build the profile of the TWU and its leadership
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists and brief them on TWU campaign activity and legal cases
  • Identify and maintain a bank of well-briefed worker spokespeople
  • Build relationships with other departments to identify and progress communications opportunities to support organising, campaigning, legal cases and recruitment
  • Write articles, columns, opinion pieces, digital content and member communications
  • Implement a digital communications strategy and high-quality content including for social media and TWU website
  • Provide support to other communications team functions including design and handling designers, member updates, photography and videography, identifying and assisting with campaign activism tools, brand and merchandise
