Unions for Yes
The Australian union movement has a long tradition of standing in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. We’re proud to be continuing that tradition this year by supporting the campaign for constitutional recognition.
We are having this referendum because it’s time to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Australian Constitution. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people want this recognition in a practical form: a Voice to Parliament.
Why is this union business?
As unionists, we believe that when workers are consulted in the workplace, it creates better outcomes. That’s exactly what this is about.
The Voice to Parliament is a natural reflection of union principles of consultation, democracy, and collective voice. Enshrining a Voice in the Constitution will enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to provide advice from a grassroots level to the federal Parliament on policies and projects that impact their lives and communities.
This is an opportunity for all Australians to come together and contribute to building a stronger, fairer nation. All Australians will benefit when we recognise and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ knowledge, cultures and stories.
Join us
For the referendum to be successful, we will need all hands-on deck to get the message out about how a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament will benefit our country.
Ultimately, it’s the Australian people and your support that will decide the success of the referendum. To support a stronger, more united country you can:
- Sign the pledge to support an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament
- Speak to your friends and family about why this is so important
- Take action and join as we campaign for a better future
It’s time we open our nation’s next chapter by voting Yes.
